The joint development of the DTM Technical Regulations was based on the following premises: safety, cost control, show and equality of opportunities. All of these criteria were fully met by these regulations in the first two years. All three manufacturers won races in each year.

For the 2014 season the Technical Regulations largely remain the same. The drivers continue to rely on the specification safety structures that protect them in case of an accident. In addition to the six crash elements at the sides, front and rear, the combination of a specification monocoque and cage with an integrated safety tank provides even better protection. The seat – similar to Formula 1 cars – is installed in the carbon fibre monocoque that is connected to a roll-over cage made of highstrength steel.

Other specification components are used in the DTM as well. These parts are limited to approximately 50 items which, in total, account for about five per cent of all assembly components. The room for development in the areas of aerodynamics, the suspension and the engine thus continues to be large enough for the manufacturers to come up with clearly unique characteristics.

Minor changes have been made in the areas of the tyres, engines and vehicle weight. The option tyres by Hankook that were successfully introduced in the 2013 season continue to be exclusively used in the race. For the 2014 season, their use is limited to a maximum of 50 per cent of the race distance. Each manufacturer now only has two spare engines available for all of its vehicles instead of the previously permitted one spare engine per team. Each engine must be used at a minimum of four race weekends. Due to the introduction of performance weights, the application of which is governed by the Sporting Regulations, the weight of the vehicle for the first weekend of the season at Hockenheim was raised by ten kilograms to 1,120 kilograms including the driver.

Brakes The carbon fibre brakes, brake pads and brake callipers are supplied by the same manufacturer (AP) to all teams. Per vehicle three sets of brake discs for the front and rear wheels may be used during a season.

DRS The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is a wing flap that allows a higher top speed to be achieved for a short time. This system has improved overtaking possibilities since the 2013 season.

Electronics All DTM vehicles use the same engine control unit from Bosch. Data transmission while the vehicle is running on track is prohibited.

Engines In the DTM only V8 engines with a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees, a maximum displacement of four litres and a maximum of four valves per cylinder are permitted. The intake system must be equipped with two air restrictors each having a maximum diameter of 28 mm. There are two spare engines per manufacturer; each engine must be used at a minimum of four events. A DTM engine delivers approximately 500 hp.

Fuel Only the fuel prescribed for the respective event (ARAL Ultimate 102) may be used.

Gearbox In the DTM only a specification gearboxdifferential unit is permitted, which is used by all manufacturers.

Safety In the cockpit the driver is surrounded by an innovative combination consisting of a standard monocoque and cage. In addition, each vehicle has crash structures on both sides and at the front and rear. The “HANS” (Head and Neck Support) system has been mandatory since 2002.

Tyres The tyres are exclusively supplied by the series’ partner Hankook. At the front, ‘Ventus’ 300/680 – 18 are used, the dimensions for the rear wheels are 320/710 – 18. Strictly for the race a set of softer option tyres is available. It has to be used once and may be used for a maximum of 50 per cent of the race distance. After qualifying the teams have to announce which of the two tyre types they will start the race with.

Weight The total minimum weight of a DTM car including the driver, suit, helmet and ten-kilogram performance weights is 1,120 kilograms. The use of the performance weights is specified by the Sporting Regulations according to the results of the races. The performance weights consist of identical ballast blocks made of tungsten, each weighing 2.5 kilograms, and must be installed at a defined location in the underfloor, roughly on the level of the driver’s feet. The maximum additional weight versus the total minimum weight of 1,120 kilograms is ten kilograms and the maximum weight reduction amounts to ten kilograms as well.

Accident data logger All current-generation vehicles have to be equipped with an accident data logger. The contenders have to make it possible for the Technical Stewards to read the standardized data loggers at any time.

Classifications There are three annual classifications in the DTM. The title ‘DTM Champion’ is awarded to the driver who has achieved the highest points score. The title ‘DTM Team Champion’ is awarded to the team whose two drivers, in the aggregate, have scored the highest number of points. For the title “DTM Manufacturer Champion”, the six top drivers of a brand who finished a race in the top ten are counted.

DRS The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is a wing flap that allows a higher top speed to be achieved for a short time. This system was introduced in 2013 to make for better overtaking possibilities. It is activated when, at the start and finish line, the gap to the preceding vehicle is less than two seconds. On the subsequent lap the system may be used once in any optional section of the race track and is automatically deactivated when the driver depresses the brake pedal. On the first three laps after the start or following a safety car period DRS may not be used. Instead, its use is now allowed up to the end of the race.

Mandatory pit stops Every DTM race includes a mandatory pit stop at which all four tyres must be changed. This mandatory pit stop has to be made in the middle third of the race. No mandatory pit stops are allowed during a safety car period; after the safety car period has ended the drivers have five more laps on which to make their stops even if that would cause the stops to be made outside the prescribed window. Refuelling has no longer been permitted since the beginning of the 2012 season.

Performance weights The 2014 season sees the introduction of so-called performance weights. Therefore, at the season opener at Hockenheim, the vehicle weight of 1,110 kilograms is raised by ten kilograms to 1,120 kilograms. Depending on the results achieved, a manufacturer has to add a maximum weight of ten kilograms (maximum of five kilograms per race) or is allowed to reduce weight by a maximum of ten kilograms (maximum of five kilograms per race). The rules for adding or decreasing performance weights are as follows: The winner of a race and all his brand colleagues finishing in the top ten have to add five kilograms in the next race. The winner’s brand colleagues who did not finish in the top ten have to add 2.5 kilograms in the next race. The weight of the vehicles of the second-best manufacturer in a race remains unchanged. The vehicles of the third-best manufacturer in a race who finished in the top ten have to install 2.5 kilograms less in the next race. The brand colleagues who did not finish in the top ten have to carry five kilograms less in the next race. If all three manufacturers are represented in positions one, two and three the weight distribution for the subsequent race remains unchanged.

Points system Points for places one to ten of a DTM race are awarded according to the 25-18- 15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 system. There are no void results or additional points for the pole position or fastest race lap.

Qualifying The qualifying format features a multistage mode. The drivers compete for their grid positions in three sessions (Q1 to Q3). In Q1 of the ‘shoot-out’ all 23 drivers have 13 minutes to complete an optional number of fast qualifying laps. The quickest 18 drivers qualify for session two and the slowest five occupy grid positions 19 to 23. In Q2 the drivers chase for fastest times in eleven minutes. The quickest eight drivers move up to the third session and the others occupy grid positions nine to 18. In Q3 the drivers again have eleven minutes to secure the pole position.

Safety car The manufacturers competing in the DTM take turns providing the safety car. It is used to avoid races being stopped. When the order to deploy the safety car is issued, all marshals wave yellow flags until the end of the safety car period, along with a sign saying ‘SC’. The safety car goes out on track with its lights on and moves in front of the leading car. Overtaking is prohibited.

Speed limit During the entire event the maximum permissible speed in the pit lane is 80 km/h. Exceptions apply to particularly narrow pit lanes like those at the Norisring, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch (each limited to 60 km/h).

Start The DTM uses standing start procedures. The starting grid lines up in offset rows. The start is preceded by a formation lap, which means that the racing cars drive one lap around the circuit in the order of the grid positions before the race is officially started. On the formation lap the drivers warm up their tyres and brakes to operating temperature. Overtaking is prohibited.

Tyres Every driver, for the entire DTM race weekend, consisting of free practice, qualifying and the race, can only use a specified number of Hankook Ventus slicks and rain tyres. The tyres are allotted to the entrants by the Technical Stewards on the first day of the event (typically on Friday). A set of softer options tyres, which has to be used once but may only be fitted for a maximum of 50 per cent of the race distance, is available strictly for the race. Following a safety car period the drivers who were running on option tyres at the beginning of this period have five more laps to change their tyres even if this would cause them to run run on option tyres for more than 50 per cent of the race distance. After qualifying the teams have to announce which of the two tyre types they want to start the race with.
