The 3 lions failed to roar in the opening game against Switzerland but their fortunes soon changed in the clash with their old enemy Scotland. June 18th 1996 will go down in histoy as the night English Football earned respect. With a 4-1 victory, the Duth had been mastered by a blistering performance from Venables’ team. The whole world was starting to take notice. In the guarter-final against Spain, Stuart Pearce buried the ghost of Italia’90 with a thunderbolt penalty kick and once again Seaman saved the ball and the day.
Histoy repeated itself as England once againe faced the mighty Germans on the pitch. Both teams put up a good fight put the penalty shoot-out loomed and with Southgate’s inevitable miss, the dream cruelly over. Tears flowed and a nation mourned. But for three magical weeks, English hearts swelled with priade as England’s footballing reputation was re-build on Wembley’s hallowed turf.
